Frequently Asked Questions

What is a power unit required for?

By means of a power controller, it is possible to supply well regulated or controlled electric energy (e.g. monitored, non-wearing, with high efficiency) to a consumer.

Which kind of load can be connected to an AEG SVS power controller?

  • Resistive load
  • Resistive load with large warm / cold resistance ratio
  • Transformer load (transformer with resistive load)
  • Capacitive load (Thyro-C only)

Which types of power controller are available within the Thyro family?

  • Single-phase controlled, for single-phase loads
  • Two-phase controlled, for two-phase loads (so-called saver circuit)
  • Three-phase controlled, for three-phase loads
  • Type current 8 A to 2900 A
  • Type voltage 230 V to 690 V
  • Type power 1,8 KW to 2.8 MW

What is the difference between a thyristor switch and a thyristor power controller?

Thyristor switch
Depending on the control signal, the load is fully switched to the line voltage or idle. In connection with a temperature controller, the thyristor switch can be used, e.g., for two-position actions.

Thyristor power controller

Proportionally to the control signal, the load is variably supplied with energy. Depending on control mode and power unit, it is possible to implement U-control, U²-control, I-control, I²-control or P-control.

Which control modes are available?

  • U-control
  • U²-control
  • I-control
  • I²-control
  • P-control

Which operating modes are available?

  • VAR = Phase angle control (according to the set point, each half-wave of the line voltage is more or less connected through to the load).
  • TAKT = Full-oscillation cycle mode operation (within a TAKT period, the load is switched on / off once).
  • QTM = Quick Takt Mode is a fast variant of the TAKT mode and particularly suitable for infrared radiators.
  • SSSD = Soft-Start-Soft-Down (like TAKT, however, with Soft-Start-Soft-Down ramp in the phase angle control).
  • MOSI = Sub-mode of TAKT or VAR for peak current limitation during the heating-up phase of temperature-dependent load resistors.

Which types of monitoring are possible?

  • Device monitoring
  • Load monitoring (also partial load)
  • Line voltage monitoring

Which synchronization procedures are available?

Synchronization procedures can be used for applications with several power controllers. They serve to minimize the mains loading and thus to minimize investment and operating costs. They simultaneously minimize mains feedback.

How to select the most suitable power controller?

  • The required load power and the available voltage determine the type power of the actuator.
  • The kind of load (resistive load, transformer load) determines, together with the requirements on the dynamic accuracy, the type series and the number of phases to be controlled.
  • In case of loads / applications which can be operated in the TAKT mode, a thyristor power unit with saver circuit (2 controlled phases: => smaller, lighter, less power loss, more cost-saving) can be used.

From the customer:

Secure, fast, no contacts and communication capable
Ready-to-plug digital thyristor switches with integrated semi-conductor fuses to ensure the wear-free switching of currents, voltages, and power. Our new Thyro-S switches can of course also be operated via the usual bus interfaces within an automated system.Stand-alone operation or in combination with process controls, PLC, or automation systems via various bus interfaces.

"During refinement, too, we trust in the reliable temperature control by means of AEG Thyro-S actuators."
Christoph Gruß, Head of the Electrical Engineering Department
Ritzenhoff Cristal

Universal, configurable and communication capable Ready-to-plug digital thyristor controllers with operating modes: full-wave cycle principle (Thyrotakt), phase-control principle (Thyrovar) and Quick-Takt-Mode QTM (for 1-phase devices). Integrated semiconductor fuse, bus interface, and the optional power regulation, all just as much part of the product as the large number of monitoring functions and the facility for optimizing mains load with synchro-cycle SYT or direct in QTM operation mode.
Stand-alone operation or in combination with process controls, PLC, or automation systems via various bus interfaces. The tried-and-trusted Thyro-3AX is still available for three-phase applications.

"We were looking for a solution which allowed fast and non-wearing switching. We have found it in the form of the thyristor power units from AEG."
